After-school Financial Aid Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to attend after-school?

The cost of after-school enrichment varies by program and the number of desired days of attendance. PTA Scholarships may be used to offset costs for the school based program. See Kids Orbit for specific cost.  If costs are a major concern we encourage families to apply for University Settlement, a free NYC Department of Youth and Community Development program.  University Settlement is not affiliated with the PTA.

Is after-school enrichment program placement guaranteed for everyone?

No.  Most after-school enrichments are not part of the NYC education department. Most are independently owned and operated.  Availability and capacity are generally limited and vary by program and time of year.

What kinds of financial aid for after-school are available at PS 130 and how do families apply?

School-based aid for students in temporary housing can be requested from the parent coordinator or school guidance team. (see below)

PTA-based financial aid applications will open in June and close at the end of July.  PTA scholarship award must be used for the year received. PTA financial aid is applied for the full school year September – June of Kids Orbit After-school program only.

How is my eligibility determined?

Students and families must show financial need to receive financial aid by completing the scholarship application. Families earning $150,000 or more per year will not be eligible.

After receiving your request for assistance the PTA After-school audit subcommittee will review blind applicant data and distribute funds. Applicant identity will not be known by the team determining recipients of aid.

What does the scholarship cover?

PTA scholarship funds cover KIds Orbit program tuition only. PTA scholarship funds do not cover required Kids Orbit application fees and deposits. Financial aid awards cannot be applied retroactively to paid tuition statements.

When should I apply?

The application for Kids Orbit will launch in June for school year beginning in September. Families should register for the program and include a note that you will apply for/ or have applied for a PTA scholarship or vice versa apply for scholarship and inform the pta committee. Once the scholarship deadline of July 31 has passed, applications will no longer be considered.

When will awards be granted?

Financial aid awards for June/ July applicants will be granted before the start of the school year. Funding is minimal and may not be available after the first few months of school.  There will be a second smaller round of scholarship applications considered in September with any remaining fund.  We encourage families to apply in the first round.

Do families need to reapply every year?

Yes. Each year a new application must be completed. Financial aid eligibility is not automatically renewed.

How much aid can I receive?

The majority if not all scholarships will be partial scholarships. The amount available to the community depends on what was fundraised  the previous year. After-school enrichment is not included as part of the regular school day requirement and the primary responsibility for payment rests with you and your family. The PS 130 PTA After-school Committee aims to expand access to after-school enrichments with financial aid scholarships. How much you are awarded depends on your financial need and what funds are available. As funds are limited, the PTA can only set disbursement allotments once it knows the level of need across the school. We strongly encourage families to apply.

Can I get help filling out my application?

Yes. Reach out to the PTA, Parent coordinator or School Guidance Counselor (see contacts below).

What do I have to do after I file my applications?

You will receive a response by email after your application is received notifying you if the application is complete or if additional information is needed. The PTA is made up of volunteers, most with full-time jobs. We understand coordinating after school can be stressful and endeavor to respond to your application quickly.

How do I receive the funding?

Financial aid awards will be paid directly to Kids Orbit. Families will receive a discount code or other means of applying the award to their after-school program account.  Families will not receive funds directly.

What other sources of financial aid should I check out?

We encourage you to inquire directly with programs that are of interest for the availability of direct aid. The following off-site (except where noted *) pick-up programs have informed us they offer limited scholarships, we encourage families to explore these as well.

Casa Lu

Crayon Power

The Craft Salon

Mindful Sports
